Coagulation and Aging: Implications for the Anesthesiologist

Abstract Purpose of Review This narrative review focuses on aging-related modifications in coagulation resulting increased thromboembolic and hemorrhagic risk the elderly. We further discuss current evidence emerging data relating perioperative treatment elderly patients with antithrombotic therapy. Recent Findings Relevant changes all elements Virchow’s triad can be found aging. Increased blood stasis due to immobility, progressive endothelial dysfunction altered microcirculation, elevated concentrations several factors, platelet reactivity lead a procoagulant state. Elderly people are, therefore, commonly treated oral anticoagulation antiplatelet drugs. therapy might essentially causative for their bleeding risk. Summary are at thromboembolism hemostatic system combination frailty multimorbidity. Both aging need special attention surgical patients.
